On the occasion of the foundation day of the Academy of Family Physicians of India, doctors highlighted the significance of family physicians in the healthcare ecosystem. Family physicians are integral to providing comprehensive healthcare to families. They are the primary point of care contact in case of any healthcare requirements and emergencies. They are instrumental in preventing the unnecessary burden on secondary and tertiary healthcare systems.

Speaking at the occasion, Dr. Raman Kumar, National President of the Academy of Family Physicians (AFPI), stated, “A family physician is not only a family doctor but acts as a guide, which helps a family in making informed healthcare decisions.”

Doctors from across the country attended the AFPI foundation day, and experts from different fields conducted a national consultation on the mandatory inclusion of “training as a family physician” MBBS course at all Indian Medical Colleges in the background of the COVID pandemic.

This AFPI foundation day was also declared ‘National Family Medicine Day.’ Prof. S K Sarin, Director ILBS New Delhi and President, National Academy of Medical Sciences, reiterated, “Family physicians have a pivotal role in the prevention of diseases and their complications such as the fatty liver.”
